Michigan-Upper Peninsula-Lake Superior. Crisp Point Lighthouse. Don Ross (here, clearing a path to the lighthouse) hosted me and provided a personal tour of a restored lighthouse in a spectacular remote setting. Don was a gracious and humble host. It wasn't until I returned home from my Lake Superior adventure, that I learned Don and Nellie Ross started Crisp Point Light Historical Society in 1991. After Nellie passed away in 2003, Don continued to lead the effort to restore and preserve Crisp Point. Don fought a very hard battle with cancer but lost the fight on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. I'm incredibly grateful to have spent a wonderful day with Don, at his lighthouse. MI-crispPt-Ross(24sep07)187

Michigan-Upper Peninsula-Lake Superior. Grand Marais-Log Slide Overlook. This high point of the ridge along Lake Superior, part of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, is almost 300 feet above the water. The overlook platform offers wonderful views – especially around sunrise and sunset – looking toward the Au Sable Lighthouse to the west and, to the east, looking down the length of the Grand Sable Dunes. In the late 19th century loggers rolled and slid logs down this sharp incline on a wooden slide, to be loaded on lumber schooners. Michigan-Upper Peninsula-Lake Superior. The Grand Island East Channel Light is a lighthouse located just north of Munising, Michigan and was intended to lead boats from Lake Superior through the channel east of Grand Island into the Munising Harbor. Constructed of wood, the light first opened for service in 1868. The light was very difficult to see from Lake Superior, and maintenance of the light was very difficult so the Munising Range Lights were constructed (Munising Rear Range Light, Munising Front Range Light) and this light was removed from service between 1908-1913. Michigan-Upper Peninsula-Lake Superior. Whitefish Point Lighthouse & Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Visiting Whitefish Point and the Shipwreck Museum had been on my "to do" list for years because of six impressionable words that have fascinated me since I was a teenager... "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." The Gordon Lightfoot song describes how the Fitz was lost with her entire crew of 29 men on Lake Superior November 10, 1975, 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan. The fascinating "legend lives on" about why the Fitz went down, and the theories are nearly as vast as "the big lake they call Gitche Gumee." The museum has a fascinating display about the Fitzgerald that includes recovered artifacts such as the deck bell. MI-whitefishPt-LH(24sep07)566

MI-crisppoint(24sep07)1079

MI-whitefish-fitzgerald(24sep07)1134
