It wasn't until I returned home from my Lake Superior adventure, that I learned Don and Nellie Ross started Crisp Point Light Historical Society in 1991. After Nellie passed away in 2003, Don continued to lead the effort to restore and preserve Crisp Point. Don fought a very hard battle with cancer but lost the fight on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. Michigan-Upper Peninsula-Lake Superior. Crisp Point Lighthouse. Don Ross (here, clearing a path to the lighthouse) hosted me and provided a personal tour of a restored lighthouse in a spectacular remote setting. Don was a gracious and humble host. It wasn't until I returned home from my Lake Superior adventure, that I learned Don and Nellie Ross started Crisp Point Light Historical Society in 1991. After Nellie passed away in 2003, Don continued to lead the effort to restore and preserve Crisp Point. Don fought a very hard battle with cancer but lost the fight on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. Visiting Whitefish Point and the Shipwreck Museum had been on my "to do" list for years because of six impressionable words that have fascinated me since I was a teenager... "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." The Gordon Lightfoot song describes how the Fitz was lost with her entire crew of 29 men on Lake Superior November 10, 1975, 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan. The fascinating "legend lives on" about why the Fitz went down, and the theories are nearly as vast as "the big lake they call Gitche Gumee."
