Captain Slate's dog "Rabbit," welcomes "Aquaman" Josh back on the boat. We were snorkeling 6 miles off the coast of Key Largo Florida. The waters over this coral reef are only 20-30' deep, but the waves on this day were turbulent and required us to wear PFDs. Highlight of the dive was a chance to swim amongst the "Christ of the Abyss" - the most photographed underwater attraction in the world. Viewing first-hand, the 8.5' tall, 4,000 pound bronze statue of Christ with upstretched arms, was a spiritual experience. Josh was the only snorkeler who was able to actually swim right up to the statue - with the scuba-divers. FL-KeyLargo03dec2010P4976

Miami Beach-Holocaust Memorial. In 1984, a small group of Holocaust survivors formed a committee dedicated to building a permanent memorial to the memory of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Commissioned in 1985, the memorial pays tribute to the memory of the Jewish culture and individuals destroyed by the Holocaust. It serves as a memorial garden for survivors and those who lost loved ones a place to visit in lieu of the cemetery they do not have. Visitors are led through a procession of visual, historical and emotional experiences, with the hope that the totality of the visit will express the reality of the Holocaust. www.holocaustmmb.org/ FL-Miami02dec2010i6353

www.holocaustmmb.org/ The Sculpture of Love and Anguish - A giant outstretched arm, tattooed with a number from Auschwitz, rises from the earth, the last reach of a dying person. Each visitor has his own interpretation...some see despair...some hope...some the last grasp for life...and for some it asks a question to God..."Why?" The Lonely Path - Is a dark and lonely stone tunnel illuminated by slats of sunlight, the haunting voices of Israeli children singing songs from the Holocaust and the solemn memory of the camps carved into its walls. A crying child is seen in the distance and cries louder as one approaches along this lonely path. A juxtaposition of spaces is created so that as one emerges from the dark and repressive tunnel and enters into the sculpture patio he experiences a burst of sunlight and a soaring space crowned only by the blue sky. A Series of Vignettes - Bronze tormented figures precariously cling to the skin trying miraculously to escape. The entire scene is a series of vignettes where families try to help each other in a final act of love. Caught in the abyss, fathers help mothers...mothers gather children...children comfort babies...all expressing the mixed emotions of terror and compassion. FL-Miami02dec2010i6385

Florida-Dry Tortugas-Garden Key-Fort Jefferson. Loggerhead Key Lighthouse. Dry Tortugas National Park lies at the farthest end of the FL Keys, closer to Cuba than the US. Fort Jefferson was built between 1846-1875 to help protect shipping lanes and provide an advance post for ships patrolling the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Straits. But I came to know it as a photographers paradise and awesome place for snorkeling. FL-DryTortugas17sep2010i5722

Another extreme geographical point of the USA...This Key West landmark signifies the southernmost point in the CONUS. Last year a run took me to the "easternmost point on the U.S. mainland"-Quoddy Head Maine. Earlier this year, I hiked out to the "northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States"-Cape Flattery Washington. Not too long ago I also hiked around the southwestern most point in the 48 contiguous United States - Pt. Loma CA. Its all good. FL-KeyWest-16sep2010P4036

Standard Tyndall Trot...Sunset was fading as I headed out, but hung around long enough for me to grab a few rave run pics from the deserted Gulf Coast cove and boardwalk lookout tower. Made it across base and to the end of the other beach boardwalk, as the last bit of daylight disappeared. Tyndall AFB, Florida. Nov2008

The serenity of Cape San Blas makes it one of my favorite destinations, when I visit the Gulf Coast along Florida's Panhandle. Though during this April 2008 visit, I noticed the pier and its building were gone and many more trees had been toppled. The Gulf Coast hurricanes had taken their toll.

Tyndall Air Force Base;(Boondogs Fitness Log)-WE 04/30/08:Cool temps for a cool run as I ran non-stop to the private beach across base (28m). Picked up the long boadwalk to the sugary-sand dunes and hit the beach just as the orange sun was peaking over the horizon. Jogged around for some photo ops and took time to absorb the wonderful sunrise. Flaming rays spread across the gulf coastline as small waves washed ashore. Ran a consistent pace back to billeting, finished on the Gator Walk, the wooden planks bending under my strides as I chased a squirrel and kept an eye on the small lakes for bigger critters (Gators!). Finished with barely enough time for a few back stretches and then off to work, having started my day in the best possible way.
